Launching of the National Institute for Korean Medicine Development (NIKOM), the new 100 years of Korean Medicine

The National Institute for Korean Medicine Development (NIKOM) (President Eungse Lee), a public organization affiliated with the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) marked its new beginning with its launching ceremony at the Yongho Square of Gyeongsan Headquarter this June.

On this launching ceremony of NIKOM transforming from the National Development Institute of Korean Medicine held on the date of the anniversary of the amendment of the Korean Medicine Promotion Act, In Soon Nam, a member of the National Assembly who proposed the Korean Medicine Promotion Act (Health and Welfare Committee of the National Assembly), the Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Vice Governor of state affairs of Jeollanam-do Province, the Director of the Office for Healthcare Policy of the MOHW and others were present.

“The launch of NIKOM will be an opportunity for the opening of the new 100 years of the 5,000-year-old traditional Korean Medicine by its construction of scientific approach, standardization and globalization” noted President Eungse Lee in his ceremonial speech. “By adopting professionalism, innovation, coexistence, cooperation and trust as core values, the promotion of Korean Medicine and its industry will contribute to public healthcare and the national economy” he added.

In her congratulatory message, In Soon Nam, a member of the National Assembly noted “Interests in traditional medicine are rapidly increasing worldwide, and we have an excellent resource of Korean Medicine with a history of 5000 years.” She continued on stating “I hope that NIKOM acts as a control tower for the promotion of related industries for Korean Medicine to hold global competitiveness.”

Prior to the launching ceremony, NIKOM signed an agreement on mutual growth and promotion of Korean Medicine with Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Jeollanam-do Province, promising active cooperation on raising competitiveness of the industry.

It holds great significance in that Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Jeollanam-do Province once again formed an ‘alliance for Korean Medicine’ with the launching of NIKOM, after their former East-West integration·establishment as the National Development Institute of Korean Medicine on February 2016 from two separate groups of the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute for Oriental Medicine Industry and the Jeollanam-do National Development Institute of Korean Medicine.

Governor of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Province expressed his thoughts stating “The role of NIKOM is required more than ever before, and we wish NIKOM to act as a control tower in revitalizing the stagnant Korean Medicine industry”, and added “Gyeongsangbuk-do Province will also actively cooperate and contribute to the development of the Korean Medicine Industry.”

“Jeollanam-do is abundant in plant sources with excellent medicinal effects, and the Jeollanamdo Institute of Natural Resources Research, the Jangheung Research Institute for Mushroom Industry and the Jangheung Integrative Medical Hospital are situated in Jangheung where the NIKOM Jeonam Branch is located. Our Province also hosts the Korea Integrative Medical Exhibit annually” said Vice Governor of state affairs of Jeollanam-do Province. He expressed his hopes saying that “We wish NIKOM stands at the forefront of promoting the global Korean Medicine industry together with the MOHW, Jeollanam-do Province and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province.”

Moreover, the first domestic consultative body was formed among the 13 local governments which produce main korean medicinal herbs with NIKOM taking the central role, for the purpose of information exchange and development of the Korean Medicine industry. Together with Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongju-si, Naju-si, Bonghwa-gun, Sancheong-gun, Sangju-si, Andong-si, Yeongyang-gun, Yeongcheon-si, Jangheung-gun, Jecheon-si, Jinan-gun, Pyeongchang-gun, etc., NIKOM plans to establish a coexisting cooperation system for quality improvement in the cultivation, management, distribution, and processing sector, and to contribute in vitalizing the local economy.
