NIKOM Conducts Online Course on
Korean Medicine for Foreigners 

- Online project on “Center for Global Korean Medicine(CGKM)”
with four other organizations -

○    An online project on the education and training of Korean Medicine is being conducted to introduce the excellence of Korean Medicine and to elaborate the global health level by passing on Korean medical techniques for medical professionals and policymakers around the world

N    National Institute for Korean Medicine Development (NIKOM, President Lee Eung-se) announced that the education and training program on Korean Medicine will be conducted online, due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.

        Korea training courses for foreigners and overseas training projects has been conducted since 2019 as part of ‘supporting for private sector projects’ of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Five organizations — NIKOM, Kyung Hee University, Pusan National University, Jaseng Medical Academy, and Chung Yeon Korean Medicine Hospital — are participating in this program, so called “Center for Global Korean Medicine(CGKM).” It includes: “Clinical Training” for training Korean Medicine techniques for foreign medical professionals; “Overseas Courses” for operating regular college courses on Korean Medicine in foreign countries; and “Policy Training” for delivering the policies of Korean Medicine and healthcare system in Korea. The program is being operated by each of the organizations, starting from October.

         “Clinical Training” introduces Korean Medicine and significant types of acupuncture, such as Saam acupuncture, and delivers the theories and practices of treating major diseases, including spinal diseases, obesity, Parkinson's disease, stroke, and facial palsy, for at least ten foreign medical professionals each.

        “Overseas Courses”to make regular courses on Korean Medicine at the overseas medical (educational) institutions will be conducted through a trial course at nine partners of six countries. University of California Irvine in the U.S. (Kyung Hee University), University of Göttingen in Germany (Pusan National University), Arkansas Colleges of Health Education in the U.S.(Jaseng Medical Academy), Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University in Kyrgyz Republic (Chung Yeon Korean Medicine Hospital), and Pacific State Medical University in Russia (joint operation by NIKOM and Daegu Haany University) are participating in this program for their students and faculty.

       As for “Policy Training,” the course targets government officials of traditional medicine by country to convey the history, policies, education, insurance, R&D, treatment methods, and herbal medicine, based on government-to-government (G2G) agreements. This year, 60 candidates from 13 countries applied for the course, proving the rising interest and stature of Korean Medicine.

 

◯   President Lee Eung-se of NIKOM said, “We should admit there have been concerns for having this program conducted online as an aftereffect of COVID-19.” “Fortunately, however,” he added, “we are receiving good feedback from trainees on the professionalism and delivery of our online training materials created by our competent institutions. We expect this to be an opportunity to promote the exceptional technique of Korean Medicine, as well as the advanced policies for Korean Medicine and our clinical training system.”

 

◯    By supporting the international expansion of Korean Medicine, NIKOM plans to continue hosting medical training programs for foreign professionals, supporting licensing of the Korean herbal medicine products in foreign countries, and providing useful information related to the global traditional and complementary medicine market.
